5 / 5 STARS!
Synopsis: New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

Review: Article 5 by Kristen Simmons is by far the best YA novel of 2012 that I've read so far and it could quite possibly be the best YA Dystopian novel that I've read thus far. For me it's right up there with Hunger Games. Yes I said. Simmon's writing sucks you and doesn't let go! I did not want to put this book down unfortunately I had to briefly to take a Midterm at school, but you better believe the second I was out of class I was back to reading it. Why do I love it so much? Because Simmons doesn't bore you with the first fifty pages or so NO, she pulls you in immediately with the action. She does a great job with leaving bread crumbs here and there for the reader. You aren't bombared with information or info vomit, no she weaves it into the story so perfectly that by the end of the story you're emailing her to find out when her next novel is out! I loved that Simmons leaves you with questions in the beginning like what's Embers relationship with Chase? Why does Ember feel so betrayed by him? Where's Ember's mom? Slowly, she answers these questions but she does it in a manner that leaves you breathless by the end. Her characters are so alive and full of depth that you can't help but fall in love with Chase. Ember is brilliant! She's the perfect character and she's complicated enough that she feels like a real person. Overall, Article 5 is a beautiful, thrilling, heart-pounding Dystopian novel that is not only well written but well thought out. Kristen Simmons is my new favorite debut author. She's awesome! I hope Article 5 gets optioned because it would make a killer movie. Love it!
