Review: Poetic Outlets by Melica Niccole takes you on an inspiring journey. As I read through each poem I couldn't help but fall in love with the speaker's voice throughout the book. I love the quote on the front of the book which says, “I was told to show the world who I am, so here I am unleashed and ready!” This describes Niccole's poetry perfectly. Nothing is held back. There's an immense amount of energy in each poem. I couldn't help but smile. Niccole certainly does have a way with words. The alliteration, assonance and consonance in her poetry is impeccable. One of my favorite poems was Black and Puerto Rican. I could relate to it, it was heart warming. It's about the beginning of a relationship and I think the thing I loved most about it was that is was witty and sweet. I think every woman wants a man who will be their “destination / Amid / The endless walk.” Another favorite of mine was “So Addictive.” This poem is so empowering and up lifting. To me it felt like it needed to be a performed or read out loud. It reminded me of some of Lucille Clifton's poetry. Overall, I loved Niccole's book of poetry. Her poems moved and captivated me. I highly recommend Poetic Outlets, it has an empowering message to all women! Take a journey through Niccole's poetry, you won't be disappointed.
