Author Ami Blackwelder at B&N.
Welcome to our Q/A with Ami Blackwelder! Author of Invasion of 2020 (book #1 of the Shifter Evolutions Saga) and her upcoming title The Mers, set to release Oct. 31st.

Where are you from?
I was born in Illinois, stayed in California until 3rd grade and spent the rest of my education in Florida. I've spent the past eight years in Asia though.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I have been writing since I could hold a pen and spell:) I wrote many short stories and poetry growing up. My first full length novel shown to the world was in the fall of 2009. I had an publisher at the time who took that book and the sequel for two years. I recently took those two books back and they are now under my name and publisher Eloquent Enraptures Publishing. They can be found on kindle and nook. The novels are an elf romance for YA.

How did you come up with the title The Mers (Mermaid Dystopian)?

Well, I played with the word mermaid and liked cutting the maid part out of it. My Mers are not quite mermaids, but the reader will find this out when they read the novel. The novel takes place in the future and much of the world in underwater. This is where the dystopian aspects take effect.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Most of my novels revolve around prejudice and oppression in some form. Shifter Evolutions saga, the Day the Flowers Died and The Mers all have that core theme.

What book are you reading now?
Strange Angels, Switched, and Burn. I am enjoying the last two. The first not so much.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

The Mers takes place 100 years int he future and the world has changed. Most of the land is now underwater and man humans have evolved into what is called The Mers. However the humans who have not changed are afraid/jealous/distrusting of the Mers and lines are drawn for boundaries of where each Mer or human can live. The story begins with Mira, a human looking character, who lives with the Mers. We follow her adventures as she tries to find out who she really is and why she lives among the Mers. We have a lovely male character named Nerin (her love interest) and his sister Nerissa who also join the adventure. With commoners, pirates, magi, and aristocratic people...this novel brings readers into a very different kind of world 100 years from now.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Well, promoting is always challenging. More so then writing is to me. I have great stories. Some paranormal, some scifi, some historical. But if no one knows they are there then that is a problem. But, with my writing....of course finding time and quiet space:)

Who designed the covers?
I did. I do graphic designs with all my covers. I also make them for other authors I know. I only charge $30-$60 based on difficulty

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Finishing. But there will be a sequel and I look forward to exploring this world some more and writing more about Mira and Nerin. After this though I am writing an angel romance and then a psychic dystopian and then a vampire dystopian and then I will go back and work on all these worlds created and finish up the sequels and last books. I also have my elf romance and shifter romance saga already written which also need there last books written. Many fun worlds to enjoy!

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Stay true to your passion, write what you love and know and never give up!

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I believe I have something for everyone. characters will make you laugh, cry, and wan to hit something. But bottom line, they will make you feel, and enter a different kind of world never before seen.
